Zimbabwe (2000-2007)
The basis of our work in Zimbabwe was again directed towards children who were infected/affected by HIV/AIDs. It was here that we understood that clean water would prolong the life of children who were HIV positive, whereas intestinal illness was likely to kill them. However, it should be said that even healthy children die from polluted water. Our first project installed new water in a village called Petrunella, and we gave every villager intestinal worm pills. Previously, people collected water from a polluted reservoir, and after the new water system was installed, illnesses dropped to virtually zero. Our second project helped to build a play school that enabled mothers and carers to go to work; all of the classrooms and play areas were built by carpenters we had previously trained, as part of our first-ever livelihood scheme. This was an all encompassing project, and also provided a lunch time meal and a school vegetable garden. We built a small hospice in the grounds of a hospital, where people in the final stages of AIDs could die with dignity, and with their family around them. We also helped a number of individuals in a variety of ways.
