Raising Funds For Mercy Children's Orphanage in Sierra Leone

Hello. I am Joe Pemberton.

In September 2007 my friend Faolan Jones and I travelled to Sierra Leone and stayed for three weeks. It was an amazing journey. We cannot forget what we saw and experienced.

We witnessed a resilient and strong people who have been battered by years of war, corruption and poverty, but also a people with unbelievable optimism for the future. We visited many different facilities including Mercy Children’s Orphanage, with which we were particularly impressed, where a man and a young girl care for many, many children. They are incredibly poor. Their building is very basic and in need of total renovation. There are none of the ‘mod cons’ as we in the West know them. They have no kitchen, no running water or electricity and none of the basics we take for granted. The children need school fees, very basic everyday necessities and equipment. Some of these children have seen things no child should ever see; and this is only one of many such orphanages.

Pictured bottom left are some of the children in the orphanage back yard.

When we returned to England we were determined to do all we could to help them.

We have joined up with Wherever the Need, and hope to raise funds urgently for this project. We will be having many fund-raising events, and will keep you posted of our progress. I know that the orphanage will be very grateful for any financial help that you can give.
