Cassava processing plant and store, Massa market, Pejeh Chiefdom, Pujehun
Cassava is a staple food of Sierra Leone, providing flour for cooking, breadmaking, etc, when the root is chipped, dried, ground and milled. The green leaves are used as a vegetable, similar to spinach. On a village level, the cassava harvest is processed by hand, but to process the crop efficiently for the whole chiefdom, a central store and processing equipment was needed.
As the store has been built next to the re-established weekly market in Massa village, part of the crop can be marketed commercially, providing a much needed cash-crop, and a sustainable livelihood for the village farmers. This project will give the cassava farmers of the chiefdom the opportunity to rise above a subsistence existence, and the benefit of a sustainable future.
