Sahun, Barrie Chiefdom, Pujehun
Sahun has a population of approximately 600, the majority of whom are women and children. Almost all the villagers are subsistence farmers, with no other means of livelihood, so life is a constant struggle to feed their families. The village had one well, but this is located 500 metres away from the centre, meaning that a great deal of time is spent carrying water from the well to the village. This well also often fails in the dry season, and they had no sanitation.
We have secured funds to provide two water boreholes, one large rainwater harvesting tank and four twin-chambered community eco-sanitation toilets at different locations within the village. The construction work is now completed, and additional funding has been secured to provide new pumps for the wells. This will transform the wellbeing of the whole community, giving them the good health to be able to take up livelihood opportunities, which is support for groundnut and cassava farming. The first crop has been harvested, providing a much needed supplement to the village diet, a small additional cash crop, and the seed for planting for future years.
Additional funding has also been secured to rebuild 16 houses that burnt down in early 2010. This traumatised the village, and most families have been homeless since the event, so this will restore the cohesiveness and motivation of the whole community.
